POP lo... Time flew... 13 weeks just passed like that... And i'm not a recruit anymore... Yeah!!! So i demand respects from the 2 who have not even start their BMT yet.

BMT didnt really change me much... i'm still the little childish + physically weak boy you all seen in school. Hee... But of cos... i did learnt a lot of things from the commanders and mates in there.

Still rmb the day when i was enlisted... Entered a world where you are not allowed to talk-back but only can listen to the orders given by the higher ranks. Plus the "#$^$&@#!^" from the mouths of Sgts + Sir. i thought that i will die in there. However, i had survived all the way through the training.

NS life isnt that bad and i'm enjoying it!!!

Read the post that i wrote on 16 July 2006??? i told all of you that i'm had been keeping low profile in there. i had failed in doing that... All becos of the stupid obstacles course. Now the whole company knows that i'm the one who scare of height... the one who fractured ankle... the one who sat on the wheelchair during the POP... HaiZ...

Cos of the fractured ankle... i had been slacking at home for the past 2 weeks. MC till 28 Sept and was told that it maybe further extended. Going for another operation in 6-9 months time to remove the metal plates. So... MC again lor...

MOVEMENT BEING RESTRICTED!!! Hate it!!!

Oh yeah... Just to update you all... i had just removed the stitches in the afternoon at Yishun Polyclinic and saw our beloved Farhana working in the Pharmacy!!!

Been missing all of you... Wondering when we can meet up as a class again...

answering queries (on the phone, customers)
going through topics with the pharmacist ( so far had topics on hypertension, cough n cold, diabetes, supplements)
counsel patients on hypertension programme by Unity ( in charge of 2 patients..heh heh)
cashering ( love this d most...esp dos lil kids trying to b adults paying while on tip toes...so cute reward dem with Ribena memo pads, sweets etc)

so far i have the Nicest pharmacist ever..Mr Cheong (aka Vincent)... he is very patient in guiding me...challenging me to read up more on interesting quries/drugs...giving freebies (Intenz masks, memo pads, books, pens, Vit C caps, staff discount on items)....treating me to nice lunches (pizzahut, Galilee Cafe') when i had to do nite shift with 1 PA... or for festive ocassions.... people here are definitely much better tho politics do persist..however..d workload here much much more bearble....d plus point here is that i get to learn about the business side of a pharmacy n to interact with people ( i LOVeeeee) n d interestin scenarios of the eccentricities of human beings...really..loving it in Unity... n to ALL chinese peeps... Happy chinese new year n to d others happy hols...WEeeeee!~

Going straight to the point: it is an advantage if a pharmacists know how to speak english, jiang hua yu, cakap melayu, gong hokkien and... hmm this is tricky gong guan dong hua (speak cantonese did i get it right?? haha). Makes me wonder our lecturers can speak how many languages haha.

This my fourth week in alexandra hosp. Got a rare opportunity to go to a clinic on the 2nd floor "which ive forgotten the name" where a pharmacist would obtain the INR results from the patient and counsel them on whether they are consistantly taking their warfarin medication. The target range for INR is around 2-3 in these patients. If they're results falls below these range means that their blood is too 'thick' so must increase dose vice versa. Yup.. no need pack drugs for the morning hehe just sit one corner in the room and watch the 'pro' pharmacists counsel in not one but 5 different languages in the different patients!!

There was this 'interesting' patient who entered and his INR reading was like 1.23. When asked by the pharmacist why he's not consistantly taking his medication he say in hokkien he sometimes take sometime dun take coz take everyday his 'ka' will swell like balloon. The weird thing is that... if im not wrong warfarin doesnt cause edema. So after some investigation by the pharmacist, he was prescribed by some other cardiac doctor before a drug which i guess it's furosemide la because when the pharmacist asked whether he got take the 'pang jo (hokkien for urinating) drug or not he replied: 'no la! cannot tahan this drug man always go toilet!' Then i was like lol joker man this guy face expression... And also a yellow pill(potassium chloride) to go with it to prevent hypokalemia coz of loss of potassium in urine.

I'm starting to love pharmacology man all the things studied in school proves to be really helpful in understanding what is going on around in my attachment here. Not to mention packing... think positively and not a robot packer, that packing can get u familiarise and remember the drugs more easily. If dunno whats the drug for then juz pull out the patient information leaflet or the different references to check it out. No time just remember or write the name and check it out when free ;)

3) Typer (Needtheless to say, yes i type documents for whatsoever reason.. and i do powerpoint slides for them so that they can teach the new nurses)

5) Snack-er (Esther taught me that.. she even showed me where she got her snacks from =X)

That's all, i can't rmb much of wat i did and sometimes the things are simply irrelevant also lol... Fortunately, the people i met are 1000000000000000000000000 times better then ppl from KK hospital =)

Busy time at National University Hospital

Let me clarify with what Amreet said on the tagboard. Work at NUH is indeed busy, at certain times and is dependent on what your role is. =P Today I was at the enquiry counter, and even if there wasn't any prescriptions, I had to file the dispensed prescriptions and bill any discharge bills. So I guess it was pretty busy for me. That Amreet got almost a day off, though he had to stand at long periods of time beside the pharmacist. *Jealous look at Amreet*

Hehe, no one has updated regarding their work places since last year, all right, allow me to kick start for this year then! Amreet and I were posted to the Retail Pharmacy at the Main Building of NUH for the first week. When we went to meet Mdm. Nancy Yong on our third day at work, we found out that we were in the wrong pharmacy! We ended up in one of the busiest pharmacy in NUH, nicknamed "R1" amongst the staff in NUH.

Work at R1 was very busy. We never got a chance to even stand still, literally! We were always rushing around with a prescription, trying to get the drugs required without the buzzer (A buzzer tagged to the queue system would sound when a queue number is beyond the set time limit.) sounding on us. (A near impossible deed when it is during the peak hour.) No wonder they hardly had any chairs there; there isn't a need for one because no one have that luxury of time to sit down.

Mdm. Nancy posted us to the Retail Pharmacy at Kent Ridge Wing (Nicknamed "R2") till 2nd of Feburary, when we would be posted to a satellite pharmacy. Work at R2 is more relaxed as compared to R1. Even during the peak hours, the buzzer does not sound as much as R1! But yes, in terms of packing wise, its less busier, till the point I see Amreet snacking on something from the pantry once in a while. (That greedy pig! =P)

Both of us also get to experience more odd patients as we see more neuroscience patients there, meaning more patients on psychotic drugs. On our first day at R2, we were introduced to this lady whom we were told that if we ever see her, we pack her medicines first, and let it be dispensed first, otherwise she would make a big rukus of it. I guess for her, the rule Last In First Out (LIFO) applies. ;)

Just a a couple of weeks ago, we had this lady who was collecting this anti-psychotic drug which had an expiry date near the end of A.D 2006. As that is the only stock of the drug in NUH and it is the stock that we borrowed from somewhere as we ran out, we could not give her any that is of a longer expiry date, until the supplier sends us new stock.

Strangely, she blasted at the pharmacist repeating lines like "You dare to sell me borrowed goods?!" ) (Note: I bold her words to emphasized that she was screaming at us all the time.) "Don't you have any conscious?!", "NUH pharmacy so big and you don't have more of this medicine?! Laughable!", "You are all educated people, and you dare to give me borrowed goods?!"

I italicized her favourite phrases. ;) There were some other phrases, but I think it is enough to show how unreasonable she was. Basically, she was angry at us for trying to give her drugs that were expiring in the same year as the course of her medication, even though it was within her prescription's medication duration and for apparently giving her "borrowed goods". Even in our course of learning, we have learnt that it is common practice for pharmacies to borrow drugs from each other in times when we run out of stock, so it is nothing wrong, nor uncommon to have "borrowed goods" in pharmacy practice.

I really have to admire the courtesy and service attitude of the pharmacist and the pharmacy technician (PT) who was in charge of stocking the drug for facing her screamings calmly and trying to explain to her as well as trying to arrange for an alternative form of the drug for her, in syrup form with a much later expiry date. If I were out there, I would be very much tempted to have a screaming brawl with her.

The episode did not end on that day, as she had to come back the next day to collect the syrup the PT tried very hard to get for her. Another screaming brawl ensured, in which she apparently was not satisfied with the answer that we do not have any more stock of the drug and she found another reason for screaming at the PT. She accused the PT for not calling her to tell her that the PT had gotten the syrup for her, even though it was agreed that she could come anytime the next day to collect it. (The rest of us can pretty much hear the agreement from the previous day that she would come without calling, since she was screaming most of the time.)

The issue was resolved one hour after the standard closing time of the pharmacy on her second visit. All this for a drug that she is collecting for her brother.*Sighs* Well, that is one of the most exciting episodes Amreet and I encountered.

Everyday lunch was accompanied with the beautiful Christina (Well she is the only lady who lunches with us anyway, besides Esther just the day before.), with snack attacks on the R2 pantry and the 7-Eleven in the Main Building. Amreet is being attached to a pharmacist who knew Miss Yap, and hopefully, both of us would be doing some dispensing next week. Phew, that is a long post. Wish all the rest a blessed new year ahead!

To all who missed the outing:
Well, it's a fun outing, there's Missy M.I.A, Sharon, Esther, Me Ling, Ana, Fana, Rus, Zi Jie, Jun hou and Terence(see i rmb u). We SUPPOSED to meet at 5.15pm at city hall control station, as usual.... people like TERENCE aka the late king, Esther, sharon and Me ling came late. Anyway, we headed to Marina Sq and decided to eat BREEKS!!! =) yummy! we ordered the food and took some pics while waiting for Me Ling to arrive.. (Terence pls upload some pics). The food is nice!! =] Most of us ordered the christmas set meal- A main dish + Soup + BROWNIE with ICE CREAM! (hell that sounds sinfully! =X), the rest were just contented with their spaghetti.. After eating our HEAVENLY, DELICIOUS and SCRUMPTIOUS dinner, we went to the esplanade...
There is an area just outside esplanade specially catered for people to writetheir wishes and hang it. SO.. i dunno who (i wasn't there, i went to buy gift wrapper with rus)... the person Zi jie went to write... "MB 0304 forever friends.".. then at the back of it... Esther wrote everyone's name... All 24 names were included in that thingy... and hang it together with others... So if u happens to walk pass esplanade try looking for it =)
then we went to the roof top of the esplande (I dunno the correct word to use.. but i called it a roof top haha) and started to exchange gifts! The exhange session was fun! most of the gifts were chocolate (including mine)! However, there is a SPECIAL one from Zi jie! He brought condom =X... wahaha... Strawberry flavour somemore... And the unlucky one who gotten the gift is his BAF (haha!) Well, our Mr Ang he did something nice to the condom! he went to blown it into a big balloon and started playing with it! With this, we learnt 2 facts about condom!
-Even though it's strawberry flavour.. It dun taste strawberry at all!!! (With Courtesy from Mr Ang) it only have strawberry smell! (-___________________________-)
-It's SUPER elastics! Let me repeat!.. IT"S SUPER SUPER ELASTICS!! haha....even better then ur eraser!!!

**Mr Ang wants me to include this... He brought a pack of condom.. there were 3 inside... 1 was used to play as a balloon.. Another his BAF took home for souvenir and the 3rd one... it goes to..... Mr Jun hou... alright.. dudes... start to question him why he needs it... He insisted that he just keeps it lo... but... u might nv know... ahahaha... =X

Anyway, We had fun.. then we played some true/dare games... Yeh.. true is not that nice to play cos that is nothing we can ask (Well, but some did expose lil sercets abt themselves... but i can't share it too bad... ) The dare part is more exciting.... like enemies kissing >_MERRY CHRISTMAS!

My 11 wks of attachment has come to an end and i wish to thank all the staff in Lilly-NUS for giving me the chance and experience for me to work there, not mentioning an enjoyable one. It's kinda sad to leave the place actually... had a farewell ceremony in the staff lounge before leaving the place. Would also like to thank the different dept: PK, Lab, data management team, stats, nurses and docs... hmm did i miss any... alright the sponser and the site haha that would do it. Thanks to my supervisor Clark kent erm i mean Clark Chan for the food... and also for the gifts from the lab and huiqing from the site (hmm did i get the name right? Hopefully i get it right lol im really bad at memorizing names).

Finally! Some updates! As I finally get an early day today (Meaning I reach home before 11pm; meaning I don't knock out immediately after my bath) let me do some updates!

I have a couple of stories from NTU. I feel like I'm doing Public Relations (PR) at times. First indication was when this photographers who are taking photographs in the chemistry research labs were looking for people to take photos for a magazine going to be published for NTU meant to attract potential NTU students. It was very funny for me when they asked me to pose for them in front of the NMR spectroscopy machine and I was laughing in my heart at the sheer irony of the situation. Here I am, NOT in anyway affliated to NTU (Other then being an attachment student), with a GPA score that might not reach NTU requirements, posing for a photograph that might be published for their magazine to attract potential students. To make things even funnier, the photographers wanted to contact me another day, to take more photos, this time around the campus itself!

That was really funny. Another time, the president of NTU came to visit the division of Chemistry, Biological Chemistry. (The division I'm attached to.) We thought it was just a ordinary visit, so I continued on with my lab work trying not to cause any accident infront of him. When the delegates went up to the conference room for a short reception, all the lab people were asked to join them for the reception! The next thing I know, I was introduced to the president of NTU by my supervisor! We even took a group photo to which he stood just one person away from me!

When I apply to get into NTU to do an undergraduate course, I'm going to find that NTU magazine and that photo with the president, and sent it in along with my application. I wonder if that would work. ;)

Quite a relaxing day today and the same for tomorrow and Saturday. No lab work! There is a conference going on, Singapore International Chemical Conference 4 at Shangri-La hotel for today, Friday and Saturday. My supervisor asked me to go for it as (1) There would be no one in the lab to take care of me. (2) I guess he wants me to soak in the wider chemistry world. I was worried about how am I to provide for my lunch as he told me not to register (I think registration costs a few hundred Singapore dollars.), so as I walked to the ballroom with apprehension, my supervisor was at the entrance and he passed me all the lunch coupons for the whole conference! Woohoo! Lunch provided!

There is another funny irony involved here regarding why my supervisor asked me not to register for the conference, but I think it is not appropriate to state it here. If you want to know about it, you can ask me personally when you see me. ;) Quite relaxing. Tea breaks and lunches here were delicious. I mean, its an international 5-star hotel! And I realised NYP is also one of the sponsers of the events. So looks like some of the lunch comes out of my school fees. Another irony... (To Russell: Too bad for you; you can't come! It makes no difference to me. =P)

As my project is coming to an end on the 23rd, pressure starting to pile on the at least 30-page report, the final presentation, the logbook and the completion of my project. SiTe and Brandon (Who have to write reports as well.) you guys are not alone. ;) Hang in there guys! Just slog a couple weeks more, feel in your logs and you will be home dry.

KK dun want me and fana to sabotage them so they decided to let us off... =) thanks god one more week to go! and we shall be free! dudes, hold on... party after attachment k? =) ooohh... about work? nth more to say except packing and PACKING and PACKING! that's all! =]

Alright I shall take this chance to update myself since I'm free now!

Well next friday will be my last day in Lilly... Got mixed feeling actually. Sad to leave cos the people here are really great. Compared to the place I've worked before, there's really not much of a politic here, which I thank God for that... phew... The nurses and lab tech are great people. I can forget my lunch when I had it with them cos they always make me laugh till I can't eat anymore... (haha... just exaggerating...) Another reason is of cos like what Sharon, Selina and Esther always tease us about... "$400 and ur workload still lesser than us..." Haha... my next attachment will not have that luxury though...

On the other hand, I am relieved that the first attachment is coming to an end cos that spells the end of my FYP too... Hooray...! So got to endure till I finish my presentation... If only I can have 6 months of attachment here...

During all these while when I'm absent from blog I've been helping out in some trials, having attachment with PK dept and Stats as well. From friday onwards I'll be having attachment with the Data Management dept lo... Will get to see Linda Liong then... (Still remember her? The one who taught us data management). Attachment with Stats was kinda tough for my brain cos figures seem to have hypnotizing effect on me and it never fails to make my eyelid weigh heavier.. Haha... But my Stats supervisor is really a nice guy. Very patient and willing to answer any of our qn... Kinda embarrass that I always fall asleep during his class... (By the way he used to be NUS stats lecturer... don play play).

Well this is a short summary of my happening in Lilly... How bout u guys? Pls don stop blogging we still have another attachment to go... =)

hmm...i was taught how to price goods,receive goods,ibt(interbranch transfer)goods,the difference of ordering from warehse/supplier,merchandising,cashiering,attend to customers(both calls and in-person)-must know and familiarize with the products here cos customers will ask you how to find this and that...some customers might even mistake you for the pharmacist and tell you long long story abt his/her medical problems and expect you to counsel him/her...i tried my best to tell wat i know but can always refer to real pharmacist lorh if dunno...
actually,you no need worry abt attachment here cos all the pharmacy assistants and the pharmacist here are nice...can always ask them if dunno...(got a bit of gossiping here among aunties but can ignore wan...)
hmm...pharmacist will test me on "pharmacology" lorh...hahah...she'll ask me to like learn on "cough and cold remedies" and etc then test me like that....
For dispensing to patients,there is a computer system to print out custom labels or prescription labels...can ask pharmacist to teach you..also got a system to check cost prices/selling prices of products...
gotta do opening and closing lorh...depends on whether you do AM shift-815am to 345pm or PM shift-230pm to 10pm..
basically, you'll be doing the pharmacy assistants' job plus learning abt what the pharmacist do/know at the same time...
one thing to take note,you have to remind the pharmacist to teach or guide you cos she will be busy until forget sometimes...also very hard to get her signature siah... :p
hmm...know how to get here ? take bus 965 opposite the road of yishun mrt station to get to sengkang then change to lrt to get to kangkar...alternative will be take mrt to sengkang then change to lrt but will be longer journey lorh...when reach kangkar;will see carpark with "rivervale plaza" ..then you should be able to find unity le...
attachment here can be busy like hell when there's lotsa customers or alot of goods coming in but also certain times quite quiet and boring....
currently, i am doing pre-listing and stock-taking....that is to check expiry dates, write down every products we have and the quantity etc...
i guess you'll probably no need do cos the next stock-taking will be april ( i asked p.a.)...
i'm doing the same stuff everyday lorh...cashiering,attend to customers,merchandising,...only sometime interesting or funny things may happen...
like ppl wanting to buy condoms but cant find where it is yet refuses to tell you what they want when you ask them...or uncles want buy viagra or cialis yet kept saying not for themselves...even got fake prescriptions...got drug addicts so cant sell 29G needles...take note of what medications/dosages can or cant give infants and childrens..there's vitamin supplements too..some can give to infants and some cant so must know...customers will ask...
little by little...you'll learn when you get here...

With the good comes the bad.. this is my ugly experience...

Most people here are good people.. but there are some... these few...argh...

I have picked out 3 examples to name which i absoultely hate...

Evil 1: Daphne aka the secretary

This woman absolutely talks too much! She talks to herself even... "Argh why hasnt this person done this,, donethat.. argh.. no this no that, hey my fone is ringing" She is crazy! Her voice is also so damn loud and childish.. she speaks like a kid! omg.. And once i was twirling my lanyard and she reprimanded me.. "Dont do that, it may break and hurt someone" Like what! Even for this minor thing, she had to scold me...

I think its just to assert her authority... All the old ladies here think they own me.. always scolding me.. i hate them..

Evil 2: Aunty 1

This is the kingpin of all the cleaner aunties here... She is the queen gossiper and even wrote an email to my CRA regarding me milo consumption rate.. grrr

Evil 3: Aunty 2

This aunty is her accomplise. Everytime i make myself a cup of milo, she is lurkin in one corner peeping.. i know she is looking.. its so obvious... she pretends to be washing the cups but i know what she is thinking.. "Omg how many spoons of milo is he using? Does that big spoon count as 2? Nah maybe il just say 3.. this lil punk deserves to be punished for the amount of milo he drinks.. "

Conclusion:
If ur young and enter an organization.. Be prepared for all this.. No matter what position ur in. The aunties always think they are bigger than you.. They all try to scold you...

Hello hello! (Tribute to Russell as to the source of the greeting.) Had been some time since I blogged about my work, time to bore you guys with more chemistry! =D Been pretty busy (Though not as busy as you guys! I can choose not to go back to the lab on Saturday.), with all the reactions and column chromatography.

Got to work with the cryobath, a machine which allows me to run a reaction at down to -78 degress celsius (I have a couple of reactions which require that condition.), using pure hydrogen gas for a hydrogenation reaction (In case you forgot, hydrogen gas is highly explosive.), more of the chiral HPLC (High Pressure/Performance Liquid Chromatography) and hydrogen-1 and carbon-13 NMRs (Nuclear Magnetic Resonnace). Got my internal licence to use the NMR machine, quite glad that I can anaylse my own compounds without having to wait for my mentor.

Dr. Joel, Dr. Donny and Dr. Lim came to NTU to have a meeting with my supervisor on 4th of November, Friday. Got to talk to Dr. Lim a little regarding my project and what to present for my upcoming presentation on the 17th of November.

More busy days await for me, with the possibility of running 3 reactions on Monday alone, which means 3 column chromatography on Tuesday. *Shudders* Don't worry guys, I'll soon join all of you in suffering on Saturdays, with all the reactions coming up, I need to stay extra in order to complete them.

Just hang in there, for those who are getting all the stick in your work. Life's like that out there, most people out there think for themselves, that is the sad fact of hummanity. The most important thing for us is to learn. For those who are suffering (Because of work politics or bad "boss"), just a lesson for us to learn that when we become senior enough to have people under us, treat them nicer! For they are human beings, just like the rest of us.

Hello Miss Ang! Welcome back! Did you manage to bring some sand from the Carribean to give us? ;) How is the weather there? Seen a real Jamaican?

Back to work!!!
Kinda nothing to do so decided to blog...
After taking 2 and a half day of MC I'm finally back to work! It's no fun staying at home feeling weak with nothing to do after all. Caught the flu bug since tuesday and get off since then. Later went to the doctor who suspect i might have dengue... (-_-") After all, I have fever, flu and rashes plus I live near Yishun... But thank God i've got no mosquito bites... It's no good being "ostracize" in the clinic while waiting for the doctor... got to mask up myself which reminds me of SARS period. hai~!...

Really thankful for mommy who took care of me even though i was kinda wilful while i was sick (haha... do i still have guan(1) huan(2) on my head?)...

anyway I'm back to work le... (^-^)... pass up my MC and log book to moi supervisor! Today got a new trial starting and went for the start-up meeting... Thankfully it's less than an hour.. wahaha... if not i'm bound to fall asleep again... \-_-/....

After the start-up meeting went to the lab to wait for more work to do.. but then sth crops up and no work to do... went to the CRT office to play a fool... asking for more work to do... end up playing dry ice turning lab into fairy la la land... (not good for my FYP report i suppose...)

hmm...been quite bz wif cashiering,merchandising,receivng N pricing goods as well as attending to customers...the customers at rivervale plaza were pretty friendly... i enjoyed saying "hi" to little children that came in with their parents...i even get to carry some infants and were surprised that they didnt cry...heez...a pharmacist(not my project sup. as she's on leave last week) told me tat newer areas like sengkang will have more children lorh...the sale of infant stuffs as well as pregnancy test kits were good le.....in older places, walking sticks and other elderly stuffs will haf more sale ba...

well...just read through the posts...to all who's suffering...hang in there k...it'll be over in a blink of an eye...(wishing... :p) aniwae..i suppose there will be some degree of bitching at diff. places ba...hmm...the biggest hiccup that i once had and were actually quite paiseh to share...i gave a sweet gal 3 multi-vitamins while she could onli take 1(the bottle say so) ... as it was the 1st time i gave vit. to kids..i was terrified as the gal + her mum left the pharmacy liaox...
worse, on the bottle says " overdose of iron containing products could cause fatal poisoning"
geez...i practically gone cold with fear and 1st thought was to rush out of the pharmacy to search for them...then...my pharmacist walked in(she comes in at 1030am while i start work at 830am) ... i told her and instead of letting me know it was alright, she asked me to look up iron poisoning in the martindale book! i was worried-sick and really frightened...it so happen that i read 27mg/kg weight for iron poisoning...i was too troubled to find out how many mg is 3 multi-vit. and could only think of the fact that i dunno how much the gal weigh...came to tink of it...it was quite funny coz i called and sms any frenz who has 4-5yr old nieces or nephews that i know of to check...i was frantic with fear that something might happen to the gal...aniwae, thank God that the gal N her mum passed by the pharmacy again and i spotted the gal and rushed to let the mum know....the mum was like "never mind (x3) its ok wan" then went off....which caused me to worry till i knock off as the mum didnt really seems to bother like that...after work...i got ms ang's hp no. from cindy(bcoz cant get to ms ang via sch no.) and were relieved abit when told the gal should be fine....nxt day...i found out that 3 multi-vit. contains 18mgx3(54mg)..the gal surely is more than 2-3kg? ya...more relieved but not fully....the gal's wellbeing was still on the back of my mind until abt 1 week later....the gal + her mum walked in the pharmacy! i was like "thank goodness she's fine".....really thank God...........
hmmm...really learnt that must confirm dosage b4 giving anything... this incident struck me..that just how little i know abt things N i could haf caused someone's death by accident if i werent careful enuff...i became more alert on wat i give from now on....hmm...yup tats it...

I get to dispense!
Finally after 3 weeks of working in NUH, im finally able to dispense, with supervision of course. It took me about 3 days to observe how the pharmacists dispense before they let me try it. It was really fun but stressful at the same time. Sharon told me that my hands were kinda trembling when im dispensing. And the pharmacists told me that my face was really red.. Haha i guess is because im really very anxious during the dispensing. However things went rather smoothly. Least the patients did not give me any troubles. After the dispension session, my ambition to be a pharmacist is even stronger. I wanna get that degree !!
The pharmacists there are really helpful. During the observation for 4 days, they taught me alot of new drugs with their indications etc. They are willing to share any information with me. At least this is what i wanted during the attachment. Even if the pay was really puny, if i can learn, i don't mind at all.

Hi all. Firstly, to all those who are having a bad time during attachment, pls hang on yea.

Recently i have been very very alone at work. Joyce and Clarence always have to go overseas to settle stuff regarding the sites such as monitoring, site initation and training. So i am usually the only one from the medical department. But nonetheless, i spend my time religously reading up all the lecture notes in the office. FDA ones, not those from nyp hehe. Quite interesting i may add. However i felt a sense of lacking.

Hence i took the initiative. Clarence was driving me home on friday, and i took this opportunity to talk to him and asked if it was possible to teach me how to monitor sites. And yay! He said it was feasible and that i would have to organise it by contacting certain people. So all i have to say to all of you is that, if there is something u dun like or if there is something you would like, please speak up. No one will turn you down. Every opportunity to learn should be grabbed.

Thanks to all... I'm fine and feeling better now. FINALY, the day have arrived... My training at Women's Retail pharmacy ended aka BLoody place with politics and bit*hes in your way! I'm going women's inpatient next week! hope that it will be better place! =) well, there's a dispute at KK hospital regarding whether let us dispense or not... Their point of view is that... What's the objectives of us dispensing? We dun even knoe the FOOD INTERACTIONS... DRUG INTERACTIONS How to dispense.... WHAT THE HELL!!! if they knoe everything like that.... AND if i knoe everything.... I will be WEARING YOUR WHITE COAT and sit there dispensing .... Dun have to wait for your to teach me..... They saying things like "You dun make us sign your dispensing list just bcos you want to reach your quota..." The fact is that.... I DID dispense the drug.... So why dun i deserve the signature? and the item is not OTC item.... (Bit*ch) Another thing, Counselling patient is not about the speed.... it's whether patient understand or not right? Someone tell me this (IT'S A PHARMACIST) "You dun take too long... you will jam up the queeue.." I was like What the f*u* FIrstly, You want me to say things like side effects, food interactions and drug interactions.... NOW, you are LIMITING the duration i counsel a patient.... You want i can RAP.... BUt u think the patient understand or not... THOSE PPL are brainless.... I think The ppl there thinks that we are SIMPLY packers... AND..... fortunately.... god is nice to me... there's maybe 2 nice pharmacists who allow me to dispense... they teach me... go through with me... so now i have 7 out of 30 dispensing =) (P.S. I did that when the devils are not ard...) and some very nice pharmacy technician/assistant who brighten my day there..... IN CONCLUSION, in future....after graduating.... i doubt i will return to KK hospital to work ......

PS... I"m feeling better.... i suppose this blog to is let us grumble and complain about things haha...

gosh...thanks christina...its nutin reallie...i haf to say ppl its reallie tough here in kkwch..n seeing christina 'breakdown', i try not to...cos we haf to keep each other strong seeing we still have abt 8-9 weeks to go...almost each day it takes sum bull strength to get out of bed n ready for werk der... really taxing on us... d amt of werk(packing), stress (high expectations of ppl der) n our project is reallie amounting... obviously der are politics n ppl dat make life very difficult for us ( well have to take dat with a pinch of salt i ges) ...but den so der r some dat makes it more bearble for us der...all thanks to sum pre-regs, pharmacists..(oh ya ms ang ur classmate janice..she's reallie nice n patient) n of cos d tweety bird granny dat makes d daily dose of pantry gossips so fun which became d highlight of our day... i ges all me n christina cld do is try our best...tho we mite trip along d wae im sure both of us cld make it thru..rite chris?

It's a true confession deep from my heart... i hate attachment.. First week, Honeymoon period.... Second week onwards, It sucks! I hate the politics there...What i saw "A senior pharmacist raised her voice at a pharmacy technician over a phonecall of refunding" And i wonder, is there a need to?...People gossiping, bossing you around.... WHERE IS THE LOVE??? Am i there to work? or to learn? my intention was to learn more things! so? IT's busy everyday.... it's so shorthanded that.... i have no time to see the drugs to know more about them except to read up on the product information leaflet.. i I'm freaking stress... the pharmcist likes to ask me out of chapter questions (YEA... she makes me read BNF... AND she's surprised i dun own a BNF...=[).. if i dunno.... she will start to say i have not been studying... IF i say i did study she will say.... "Oh... u studied SPECIFICALLY what i told you too.... " I was like.... i have no time .... after work it's damn tired and that i only have 2 half hour per week for project... My project is more important to me... But i can't explained my situation but to swallow everything deep inside.. what to do? she's is going to assess me... To them it's all excuses... Have you guys ponder over Why we slog so hard sometimes? what did u learn at the end of the day? simply plain packing? I'm eager to learn if only they could spend more time on us!....Finally i got to dispense some pessaries, vitamins and some pills for osteoporesis...(that's the only thing i'm happy with... but she did not sign for all... cos she thinks vitamins too easy for me... and the rest is like need to brush up more) SIGH -__________- me and farhanna Did Chat with the pre-reg.... she say something.... "It's the attitude towards my work..." Is the attitude towards the job lacking in me? or i'm not easily contented with the packing? i dunno! Ms Yap did encourage me to be more positive.... More positive? Keep looking into the mirror and say " tml will be better...? ... I love KK ? i love my job ??" I dun feel like cheating myself.... Guys... Be in my shoe and think about it... what exactly can i do to actually feel happier there.. And .... i really gotta thanks Farhanna for being there encouraging me and listen to my grumble abt the work!... (Girl... You should know which incident... Watching dispensing in action
Today was the first day that im officially attached to a pharmacist to see how they dispense. Initially when i knew i was attached to this particular pharmacist, i was kinda worried. She doesnt really talk to us during the first 2 weeks of our attachment and i felt that she can be cold sometimes. But instead today, i think i get to know her better. She was actually kind and sharing. During the non peak hours, she would go through with me most of the prescriptions and telling me what exactly the patient is suffering from, and what disease the drugs are used for. Basically i learnt quite alot about some drugs which ive not been taught in school before. She also gave me some of the information leaflets to facilitate my learning of those "new" drugs. I think that watching them dispense is a very good way to learn. At least this will sometimes stimulate my thinking and get me flipping through references to clear my doubts. I think its better than just packing drugs day in and out mechanically, without even having the time to stop and think about the prescriptions and drugs' indications etc..

Hi everyone! So sorry now then post my blog. 2 weeks gone already....got miss me or not? Ya...i admit miss u all...haiz...no one bullshit with me here...all alone in NUH cancer institute...except sometimes during lunch got ling ling, sharon, selina and janson to gossip with. Let me start sharing with u all what things i have done for these past 2 weeks:
Week 1 --> Orientation loh...repeat my history times and times...again and again until someone offer me to record down my history to save my saliva. Given a protocol to read and come up with CRF. Have my first part of 1 to 1 lecture (because i am the only one attached to there, so 1 to 1 loh) that last 2 hours! Talking about NUH Cancer Institute history and what I learnt in school. Almost doze off...haha...cos i get to lost concentration easily...but cannot blame me! 2 hours...its a pretty long time loh without any breaks... and i was hungry too at that time, thinking of cup corn and wages. Ya...other than that...get to go "jalan jalan" with the study coordinators to the cancer center...see subject loh...stand beside like road block like that...haha...but not bad lah...at least get to know better about real-life clinical trials.Also sometimes, get to be translator...haha...study coordinator who is a filipino, often bring me "jalan jalan" becuase whenever she has a chinese subject who speaks mandarin only, she will sure bring me go there and translate loh...like ask whether they feel good, got take medicine, any discomfort after chemo that sort of things...ya and also repeat my history to them...hence get to know some subjects and have a chance to show off my powerful mandarin! Thats what i did in the mornings. In the afternoon i will go over to the mursing admin to do a non-drug trial...there i key in data and ...enjoy myself...haha...siter nurses there very good to me...there slack....key in tons of data but once you get use to it then it will be fast...after that you can surf net and also they give me CD player to play music. Ask me to bring food to microwave and eat here also can. Then sometimes bring me "jalan jalan" loh. Share with me what nurses do and also bring me to NUH Quality Talk to take a lot freebies and have buffet there! (Zijie dun jealous hor)

Week 2 --> Design CRF and show it to the person in charge of me there, ms ong. Made a lot mistakes i should say. But its okay cos learn quite a lot from there. Ya get to do PK sampling on a new subject. Given 3 chances to do it. 1st chance I gave up cos I not prepared yet...its safer to make sure you understand the procedure then can do right? 2nd chance I poke into the cannula successfully! But blood was difficult to draw. I thought the moment you poke into the cannula...it would be easy to draw the blood. But i was wrong...it was difficult and i was shocked! luckily study coordinator say nvm and helped me along. So this time round consider fail lah cos got pple help. Then the 3rd chance, I managed to draw the blood successfully without help! so happy although is a simple process. And also i get to process the blood myself...in fact is just centrifuge, take out plasma and then put in the freezer correctly then done. Nursing admin there as usual...key in tons of data but fast enough to finish all...thats why now i have the time to blog in front of the sister nurse and play solitaire! haha! heard sister nurse say going to bring me ward one day to do the trial...maybe that will be fun loh...

No complains... instead I'm filled with thanksgiving!
I'm really thankful that I'm attach to Lilly-NUS where the people are so friendly, with a supervisor who likes to chase us home as early as possible. Not only so, but also purposely give us exercise to do after knowing abt our 'problematic FYP' which we have to hand in. If not, we will have a too smooth journey in Lilly and not able to hand anything for the FYP report... I am also thankful for a nobel lab technician like Victor, who is willing to give us his blood so that we can use it to practice sample processing when subject's blood is not enuff for us to use. Not forgetting about Janson, whom i'm very sorry for wasting his blood cos my phlebotomy technique is so bad...

Though at times it can be quite boring yet it is during this time that I make use of it the most. Other than chatting on the web secretly, I also make an effort to do research abt the drug and technique that we need to use for the trial we are involve in and gain better understanding than before... The dull time passes real slow, but after it has passed I know that I have not really wasted my time... Great! [PS: another dull time is during conference and meeting. --> slept a few time and i suppose they saw me thru... (-_-")]

Another thing to give thanks is to Ms Yap and Ms Ang... for all the hardwork that u guys put in to train us. Now i'm doing clinical trial and i can relate quite a lot of thing that Ms Yap taught us though can't remember everything. Next to give thanks: Esther, Sharon and Selina! Having lunch with u guys is a great thing at least it is never dull as compared to eating in the pantry with ______... haha... u guys know what I'm trying to say... I love to hear their experience and share with them all the stupid mistakes that I made during the lab session as well... It makes my lunch time the most enjoyable moment of the day!

Finally to my attachment "buddy" --> Janson. hor... this guy... yes must give thanks that at least I am not going to a company alone but with a fellow classmate... He's quiet...but thanks to him for answering the question that i do not know how to answer when supervisor ask us, for sharing the 'burden' of calling all the bosses to ask them to give us training and etc...

To all MB 0304 --> though we are at our respective company for attachment purpose but i think what ms Yap say is really true --> our relationship with other people is still more important than our work [It is after all people whom we are serving not the work itself, rite?] =P

First day at counter
Ya.. serving customers.. At least its something intresting for me becoz i get to see the patients instead of standing behind packing the drugs. However there were some unreasonable patients i met today..
This guy came with a prescription of 7 drugs, but NUH carries only 5. Then he kept on asking how much the price, and whether we can do ordering for the remaining 2 drugs. We told him that he had to go outside like guardian to get it but he was so angry and irritated and kept argueing that how am he going to do w/o his medicines. We told him its alright but just have to go out and get it. And he kept asking and pushing us to be faster when we were trying to check the price for his drugs. We are just doing patient a favour and that we are not obliged to actually help them to check out drugs not available in NUH. He must learn to appreciate instead of being impatient.
Another case is that this lady came with a prescription, but she told me that she's gonna come back later becoz she felt hungry and wanna go have her lunch first. So i just process her prescription and told the ppl inside to pack it. However during dispensing her drugs by 1 of the senior pharmacy tech (PT), she was not around to collect it. The PT then placed her drugs aside him at the counter. When that patient returns, she asked me whether her drugs was ready or not in a angry tone becoz she claimed that she waited awhile but her number did not flash on the screen. I searched high and low for her medicines but did not find it. I told her to wait while we find it but she started raising her voice and said something like " You lost my drugs... obviously you dispensed it to a wrong patient!"
At that moment i really don't know what to do becoz i trust that the pharmacists will not dispense wrongly. Then someone found her drugs beside the counter where the senior PT was previously at. By right i thought that uncollected drugs are suppose to be placed at a drawer dedicated for it. That's why i cannot find it in the first place. I was kinda pissed becoz i got scolded for nothing as it was not really my fault..
Another patient with similar scenario happened a little while later. But luckily this time, this patient was not angry, but joked around and waited for her drugs to be found. And again.. it was at that senior PT counter again when he put aside during dispensing when the patient was not around -.-

Hello Everyone!

Miss having you guys around..

Reading Christina's blog and she mentioned that her pre-reg pharmacist told her "well we haf to start from the bottom..everytin has its beginnin den u will understand n appreciate better"...

That's so true.. even when I was a pre-reg, I had to pack drugs for months before I was allowed to dispense. Even as a pharmacist, we are not spared from packing drugs, price-tagging, doing extemporaneous preparations, typing labels etc. Do not think that a degree or a dip makes you a better or more superior human being than your colleagues. As I have always stressed in school, attitude is very important. We all work as a team in the pharmacy. There is no such thing as an inferior job..

I'm really so happy to see all your blogs here and listen to your experiences.. quite fun actually.. can relive my younger days (PS: I'm not that old la... haha).. but i think this blog makes me sound like some old longwinded ah ma..

Ok.. for the next two weeks.. enjoy yourselves.. I will be somewhere in the other part of the world enjoying my hols... hehe

Fire in the Lab

Going to use chemistry terms here, let's see how much you guys remember. ;) I was washing chromate (VI) oxide crystals off a spatula on Tuesday, using acetone. I was making PCC (A mild oxidising agent), and those crystals are one of the starting materials. And then, the waste flask which I was washing the spatula in burst into flames. For awhile I was staring dumbly at the flames while this thought flashed across my mind, "Fire extinguisher, fire extinguisher, FIRE EXTINGUISHER!!!". One of my labmates ran to the next door lab to grab a fire extinguisher. As I watched her run, I was wondering where she was going, because I remembered seeing a fire extinguisher in our lab, ah well, I just watch her. =P

She tried to release the plastic catch, but couldn't. I grab a pair of scissors and cut away the plastic catch so that we can release the safety pin. She then tried to press the handle to release the CO2 but couldn't. (This is partly due to her panic and her small size, she is really small in size.) In the end, she aimed, I squeezed the handle. Hehe.

Moral of the story? Never wash inorganic chemicals into organic wastes. We deal mainly with organic chemicals, Chromate (VI) oxide is an inorganic chemical. Well, you guys break glasswares, try setting a fire in the lab! Blah! *Sticks out his tongue* People here are nice, they never blamed me for the fire, well, because I did ask one of them whether I should continue washing with acetone or water before the fire. (So not exactly my fault although I did commit the act...)

On Monday, I left at 8:45pm! Had to run a long colunm chromatography and wash up. The PhD students in the lab I do my project in have superhuman strength. They arrive earlier than I do (Which is 7+) and they leave much later than I do (Which is most likely 8+ to 10+). I wonder how they survive daily.

Going to get NMR training next Monday. Doing project here seems exciting, with all the journals to read and the reactions to run, extraction and column chromatography. All the spectroscopic techniques. I'm actually doing all the stuff we learn in Pharmaceutical and Organic chemistry but never get to do it in NYP. Fun~

heylu every1..reallie miss u guys now comin to week 2..all dos borin lectures nw meant sumtin.. ok maybe d memory of eatin wedges durin lecture :P... aniwaes...everydae is such a tiring dae being on ur feet almost 7.5 hrs... nonetheless todae was pretty exceptional... well dis few weeks im attached to the children's retail pharmacy dat also serves the outpatient pharmacy... with me there's dis very sweet pre-reg. pharmacist, Pearlyn... she's been at KK for sumtym but yet she is so humble not like urm sum pharmacists... she's willing to help me with ma calculation, extemporaneous preparations n although she's a pre-reg she has to do the packing of drugs...we talk n when i sigh due to its tiredness n asked her why she didnt dispense (believe me kids dis daes get sick n are prescribed tonnes of medi + now sch hols..tsk tsk), she simply sed " well we haf to start from the bottom..everytin has its beginnin den u will understand n appreciate better" i was so blown away n frm den on didnt complain as much...n oh yes i get to dispense first time!! ehehe exhilirating!! tho abit nervous but den he did understand...but ma pharmacist incharge wont record it down as he sed since its in malay he cnt understand n therefore cant mark me n record it... :( wasted.. :P

we are trying to find new ways to deliver heparin to the body.
Juz to refresh memory... heparin is anti-coagulant... it is administered to the body via injection only.
Now what we are doing is trying to deliver heparin to the body using novel approach such as via microcapsules...

we envelope heparin inside microcapsules, and took photos of it using microscope. *tht is sooooo interesting, beside the kangaroo & koala bear bear*

tht was all done in week 1..

for this week (week 2) we will be doing wif florence tag, and trying to quantify it. heh..

Hi... how are you all?

I should thank Miss Yap for posting me to Sengkang UNITY. There i met a very good pharmacist, Miss Peck. She is helpful, friendly, responsible,... and more for me to find out. oh ya she likes chemistry hehe...
ya she prepared a time table for me containing what i will learn in this 11 weeks.

Miss Li fang (Peck) built a very close relationship with the customers, to her i think they are patients.
When the patients come, instead of telling her what they want to buy, they tell her their problems n diseases. Miss Peck will then ask more detail before choosing a suitable medicine for them. I will then standing beside learning her skills.

I learned cashiering, tagging price, calculating cost and other merchandising stuffs. I have never been a cashier before, so these look interesting to me. They sound simple, but it took me sometime to learn them.

The great thing is Miss Peck teaches me a lot about medicine. She will allow me to explore her pharmacy only drug and POM include viagra. haha... She will ask me questions that stimulate my thinking and link things together. Sometime she can throw me a question that stimulates my nerves for hours.
Yesterday I was asked to compare the different types of eyedrops , their uses and to find out what products can be used for contact lenses by looking at their chemicals. diao...
then i remembered Ms Ang's notes.. now then realised that patient care is important.. and Zeyi's polarity rules apply everywhere...

I also learn different functions of all the supplement products. still have alot more to learn... i enjoy my days there...
hmmm... tml morning have to attend their pharmacist training very early 8.30 pm at great world city.
probably i can meet some of you there.

I MISS ALL OF YOU!!!!!
Alright, It's my turn to blog about attachment, by the way, i'm attached to K K hospital. The greatest flaw of K K is that that's no cute looking guys or pharmacist! (So Sad! =() Haha... Well, the first week is basically orientation, went store to learn how to pack drugs, went Oncology lab doing nothing but paste labels for the plastic bags. Know more about how to find information about drugs and FINALLY me and farhanna went into the children's retail pharmacy (LUCKILY not to do price tagging =P) we went into learn how to packand label drugs, read RX and calculate the dosage. Ya, did make some mistake =P was glad that i'm not scolded. Well, hope that next week i can do my best at women's retail pharmacy =) Take care guys.. and yes i admit I MISS ALL LOADS......... =)

1st week is over!

Tons and tons of work. Very tired already. I wake up every morning trying to find an excuse not to go to work as i am so tired. But by time i enter the office, im raring to go and excited to work another day for SCHERING. This is actually the 1st job i have done that makes me feel fulfilled. I finally have begun to appreciate clinical trials and i must thank miss yap as her teaching was very extensive and covered so many parts of clinical trials and thanks to that i didnt look like some blur cock in the office. :)

New things that i have learnt: Checking for ADR using CIOMS.

I decided to bring the laptop home for the weekend as i have to prepare an application form which is rather extensive to submit to Gleneagles for participating in our clinical trials. I really hope that this works out as we are really in need of patients for the qouta and i pray this time we get patients. Anyways i have to submit the application form to Gleneagles by Monday and decided not to take any risks by doing it on Monday as both my seniors are away on Site Initiation trips which leaves me alone and if i keep emailing them queries, its going to be very time consuming so being the good little boy that i am, i decided to take it upon my responsibility to complete as much as i can over the weekend so that progress can be made faster.

In the real world, the most important phrase is "TIME IS MONEY" and i realised that its very true when you spend so much money a day and if nothing is done, its good money wasted.

First 3 days of work were mostly on packing. Sometimes we did some checking of stock for their expiry dates and recording those that gonna expire in 1 year time. So ya basically its all about packing the correct drugs in a fast and efficient way. I guess this will continue for like at least 1 week until we are used to do it accurately and quickly.
Oh ya btw, our pharmacy sees lots of psychiatric patients, followed by gastrointestinal disorders like gastric problems and constipation. Lots of clozapine, bromazepam, fluoxetine, lactulose and omeprazole..

Day 2, very very very mentally exhausting. Both the regional manager and CRA were down with a bug today. Hence, i was given tons of lectures to read. Each over 100 slides long!!! Holy... But thankfully Joyce, CRA, emailed me a document to work on regarding patient recruitment. That was indeed much interesting than reading from a computer.

The best part about my office is that in one corner, there is this "lounge" where you can relax with a cappucino and sit on the plush couch and juz stare into the sky where planes land and take off. Below is a meadow of blooming dandelions. Nah just kidding, just untamed grass. But still the colours blue and green were oh so calm. I juz plopped myself down and started reading one of their books on clinical trials.

Work culture in a german company is definitely so much more flexible than a singaporean context. I think i caught the bug. Feel so weak now. Hope i can go to work tomorrow. I might be following them to Gleneagles for a meeting! Weee!

woohoo... Guess everyone's having a great time in their respective attachment places. Well as Janson have mentioned, we are attached to Lily-NUS and that's FYP for me... And now let me recount my first day till now...

I was told by Ms Yap that our supervisor was quite good looking and make me so excited (wahaha...) so I was really looking forward to the first day where we will be introduced to our supervisor... and well... ermm... He's fine! Really! Too bad attach le... Haha... But that's besides the point... (-_-")

I really like my first day at work where we were introduced to the whole staff of the organization and it's really hard to remember all the names in one day but hopefully we'll get it right as time goes by... Like the rest, the staff who took us around are all nice people very friendly, but I'm kinda not quite myself as I am reminded by Ms Yap's words of not to tarnish the school's reputation and blah blah... so have to behave myself and show the best positive attitude to everyone around... (kinda shy too... ice-breaking not as good as Amreet's one hee...) But hopefully by this week we'll get to lunch with other colleagues or so and get to know them even better... Well the best part was that we were told that we actually had a office desk all by ourself... woo... that's a luxury for me cos never had the privilege before... I did attach a picture of my working desk... We also got our access card and it's pretty professional but that our chain looks like erm... ___ _____ but i kinda like it though

Oh ya one thing so cool about Lily is that the distance between Lilly sponsor side and the actual site is 2 door away. So the CRA do not have to travel for monitoring and stuff like that... Later during lunch we had it with our supervisor who showed us the cheapest food we can get in NUS and it's really cheap... i spend only $1.80 on my lunch and the vending machine is also heavily subsidised by the company... one can of coke only cost about $0.50. Cheap isn't it? Heard from the supervisor that it used to be free but was misabuse by the staff over there... (T_T) that's why the company have to make the staff pay some at least... Singaporeans...

After lunch we had a few SOPs to read and it's pretty dry... (ok, i admit! i did fall asleep while reading but i woke up real fast!)
Then we had to attend lectures too... woo... Though some of the stuff we did learn it in school but i think it is really nice of the company to help us revise our work and train us before we start on any projects or lab work... Thank God!

Well i think that's all. Will fill in more details as the days go by... Hope you guys are enjoying ur work too!

My first day of work was in Lilly-NUS (together with Lingling), nothing much i would say just touring of the company and being introduced to some staff. Actually not some but many of them! Tried remembering thier names at first but soon there's more and more... and more. Other than that given some SOPs of the company to read on what you should do and what not.

The second day was much more interesting. The supervisor brought us to watch an actual clinical trial being carried out in humans. The buzzy atmosphere was an eye-opener. Besides that did some citing of journals, short lectures and reading of an actual ICD and protocol which was handed to us. With all the technical knowledge imparted to us over the last 2 years, thankfully everything or should i say most of the things are still comprehensible... so far so good =D. Well the actual work where we would 'get our hands dirty' (that's what the supervisor said lol) will start on 17 oct... would definately anticipate that.

Oh and I learnt something today... since my work ends at 17 30, never eat dinner there or guess what... the bus would be jam packed with NUS students! Ended up reaching home at 20 00 ... 2.5 hours of travelling time -.- guess i have to skip my cca for today =p

First day of work
Sharon and I both were posted to NUH's retail pharmacy department. We reached the reporting place today at 8.30am and attended a briefing about the organisatin of NUH's pharmacies. They have lots of main and satallite pharmacies around NUH. The lady incharge of us was Nancy. She was very friendly and made us feel very welcome.
After that briefing, we went over to the pharmacy which we are suppose to work for 2 months. Redzwan was the senior pharm tech over that who taught us the ropes today. We learnt about packing drugs from prescriptions. We had to be cautious of many things just alone in packing. Names, strength, formulation etc must be checked thoroughly before picking the drugs for packing. I can tell you its kinda stress becoz if any medication errors occur, you will be giving the seniors there trouble becoz they had to repack again.

I've made a few mistakes today, like taking the wrong formulation (the package for eye drops and ointment are really very similar), and like pasting the label in the wrong way or forgeting to check certain things before packing. However Redzwan was not furious but instead correct me in a very friendly and helpful way. I find that after making such mistakes, ive became more vigilant in doing it since i will always remind myself never to repeat it again. I hope things will get better next time, and not causing any troubles there while working. Target for myself this week is to pack drugs in a more efficient and faster way without mistakes.

I left my home at 6:00am, not knowing how long it would take me to reach Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Read through my Organic Chemistry notes along the North East Line and slept through the East West line all the way till Boon Lay. Took 199 to NTU, with the most vague of all instructions from friends studying in NTU, "Just get down from the bus when you see a lot of people getting down."

Along the journey to my supervisor's journey, my initial thoughts about NTU was, "This place is big, pretty and green!". The chill of the morning air greeted my skin wherever I walked, the silence reminds me that the world in NTU is only just waking up. Somehow, I reached my destination, the office of my supervisor. The corridor lining the staff offices had the musty new smell, it looked new as well!

He arrived, and talked to me briefly regarding some administrative matters, then he asked one of his students to mentor me along with another lady, a research assistant working in one of the research labs. We took a lift to the basement 2, well, not much of a basement since NTU is set on a hill, just like Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), only much bigger. The lab was well equiped with all the things one would need to do organic chemistry experiments, I was tasked to start small, with the first step of a whole series of reactions, and was given a general orientation of the lab as well as the people there.

I left at 5:50pm, it was a slow day, but as I remember and re-learn my techniques, so will the pace of the reactions, and soon, you guys would probably see me staying back beyond my allocated timing. ;)

Today was My First Day at Retail Pharmacy. The shop is pretty small. I am like a elephant in there. All girls and aunties except the pharmacist is a guy. Pretty retail stuff..Nothing science and clincial...I learnt how to put price tag,use the system to check the price,display abit of stuff and finally, do stock check when the stock arrive...oh gosh...So PM...Fainting...It left me wondering what am i doing in a retail pharmacy. And definitely, pharmacist will never be my profession. In a retail pharmacy, the pharmacist only give the drugs without much consulting because the customers already know what they want. Nothing fascinating.

Today, i am asked whether i know the pharmacy law..Oops...I forgot..I need my basic dispensing notes again..Need to read up on patient care too...So many things....Dont know am i be able to go through it ..... 73 days to my Salvation.

Hi guys, today was the first day of work. I left my house with much uncertainty looming in my heart. It was really nervewrecking thinking of what lied ahead.

The journey was very long and i even thought i was lost. But thankfully, i saw the Expo halls and knew i was in the right direction. As i approached the bulding where i worked at , The Signature, butterflies were fluttering away.

As i went up 7 stories to the office, i could not help but marvel at the gorgeous building i was in. It felt really posh to say the least. I saw the door, which was made entirely out of glass and 3 metres wide the least. No one was in and i wandered abit outside until Clarence Khoo and Kit came my way. Immediately he knew who i was. We exchanged pleasantries and he led in me. I was given a thourough tour of the place. My favourite part if u ask me was the pantry. Expresso machine, Fridge, drink machine, tidbits. Yum yum. I was offered cappucino by Clarence but declined as i wanted water at that moment.

I laid down my bag thereafter on my L-shaped desk which was huge. Then, i stepped into Clarence's office and we had a hearty 1 hr long chat about the company, myself and himself. It was really the icebreaker i needed. The company felt so receptive. I felt at home. I was introduced to all the staff whom i must say are extremely friendly.

I was later presented with my own personal laptop which also had my personal email in it. I was also given a telephone line but it is not installed yet. Maybe tomorrow. I proceeded to double check all the copies of files that laid around for syncroncy which otherwise meant everything was in order in all files. I did some bit of paperwork as well as reading up some notes in the office which were very informative.

I was beginning to like this place. It was cosy. Lunch time came and the managers and I had a hearty lunch. Food was inexpensive thankfully. After lunch, the fun came. I attended two manager meetings which really was an eye opener. The real world laid before me. Just in case anyone is lost, I am working in a Regional HQ for SCHERING. The place i work in does not carry out clinical trials as all the main managers reside in there. It oversees all the clinical trial site over the region. We talked about countries and which was profitable and which werent. Politics was in the air. Inevitable.

At 3pm, I proceeded down to SGH with the CRA, Joyce Lim, to gain ethics approval for a protocol for a new upcoming clinical trial. After which i went home. Pretty eventful day it was. Currently i am waiting for the director's meeting which i am scheduled to attend in November. Its going to interesting i say. I guess the objective would be to discuss the quarterly performance but i can't say more as im bound to the confidentialy agreement of SCHERING Asia- Pacific.

Yeah... gd luck all ya on ya attachments.. gosh.. time really passed so fast.. n not knowing.. we have ended our 2 n half yr semester.. now attachments.. haiz.. surely be missing our class.. the funs we had and all the gd memories of it especially the talentime days.. well, see u guys again after aour attachment date ends, during our presentation.. take care all ya..

today is e last day of the holiday tt we haf...enjoy as much as u can cos tml will be e 1st day of our attachment!!
rem to do ur best for our attachment and hope to u all real soon..hope tt we can meet up often even though we are all separated everywhere in S'pore.

Today is Ms Yap's last day at work.

If you ask me how I am feeling.. I guess it's mixed feelings.

She has been a wonderful colleague & friend, someone who is always so willing to help and share her experiences. She is frank, doesn't hide her feelings and is someone who does not have any hidden agenda when she deals with people. I have seen how she has warmed up to your class .. haha.. some of you told me that you thought that she was very stern initially. But in actual fact, Ms Yap is a very warm and caring person.

I know I will surely miss a good friend. Someone whom I can share (and gossip, hehe) freely. Someone who has made an impact in my life for the past 16 months.
